'Getz/Gilberto', the bossa nova classic by Stan Getz, João and Astrud Gilberto, is one of the most famous Verve albums and one of the best-selling jazz LPs of all time.
Chance sometimes writes the best stories. As in the case of 'Getz/Gilberto'. Astrud Gilberto had actually only accompanied her husband João Gilberto to the recordings as an interpreter.
But then Stan Getz let Astrud sing the tracks 'The Girl From Ipanema' and 'Corcovado', even though she was not a professional singer. The album, which was also recorded with Jobim and drumming legend Milton Banana, became a worldwide hit and was the first jazz production ever to win the Grammy for best album of the year.
There are more than 40 US releases (and hundreds worldwide) of 'Getz / Gilberto', and for good reason: few recordings better capture the breezy warmth and casual sophistication of Brazilian bossa nova for an American jazz audience. Few recordings can capture the feeling of 'being there' and the pristine studio acoustics. The single 'The Girl from Ipanema' made it into the top 10 of the Billboard charts.
Despite the numerous re-releases, Impex Records didn't shy away from the competition and took on a real challenge. Label owner Abey Fonn worked directly with Stan Getz' wife Monica Getz and their son Nicolaus. Their common goal was to create the most authentic 'Getz / Gilberto' production of all time.
The exclusive one-step LP box set also includes a revealing new interview conducted by author and music historian Charles Granata, in which Monica Getz recalls the making of this album and its subsequent success, as well as Stan Getz's struggles with his demons.
Also unique to this release are two bonus tracks: an alternate 7' mono mix of 'The Girl from Ipanema' (without the added echo) and a live recording of 'Corcovado' from Carnegie Hall. Finally, the large-format 36-page booklet contains dozens of rare photos, the original album notes and fascinating personal recollections from Monica Getz herself, giving an insight into Stan's family life during the recording sessions! The remastering for this release was done by Bernie Grundman, and the two one-step 45 rpm LPs were pressed on VR900 SuperVinyl. The box set is limited to 7,500 copies.
