Although he was one of the first important New Orleans jazz soloists and a fantastic soprano saxophonist and clarinetist, Bechet was never truly appreciated in the United States. Although his career began in 1917, his career did not truly flourish until 1949, when he became an overnight sensation in France based on his phenomenal performance at the Salle Pleyel Jazz Festival in Paris.
