Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto was given the nickname Emperor because of its majestic grandeur over previous works. Half-deaf, Beethoven wrote the work while Napoleon was bombarding Vienna, and it met with incomprehension at its premiere. A work in which the piano is accompanied by a furious orchestra and yet keeps its distance has never been heard beforeHowever, this very combination was a perfect fit for the Telarc label with its preference for classical recordings with large instrumentation. The Telarc production dates from 1981 and was recorded with the Soundstream digital system at 16 bit and 50 KHz. The engineers were careful to maintain a wide dynamic range, which continues in the modern 32-bit mastering version.
