Oliver Nelson is known to posterity primarily as an arranger and band leader. When he came to attention with a series of recordings for the Prestige label, he was celebrated as a leader of small ensembles and a composer who refreshed musical traditions while looking ahead. Screamin' the Blues is excellent evidence of this: a rousing, funky modern set interpreted by a virtuosic and visionary sextet. It features saxophonist Eric Dolphy as well as Richard Williams, Richard Wyands, George Duvivier and Roy Haynes. The recording was done by Rudy van Gelder, and the remastering of the hybrid SACD for Analogue Productions was done by Kevin Gray.
