To be counted as one of the most important European masters in the field of the music theatre in the 19th century, a composer sooner or later had to present his works at the Paris Opéra for discussion.<br /> <br /> The Paris premiere of Jérusalem, a magnificent production at the Opéra on 26 November 1847, must be regarded as a successful French debut for Verdi, which paved the way for continued co-operation with the prestigious theatre. Ten years later a Paris critic commented that with Jérusalem Verdi had earned citizenship in France, and the Opéra had acquired another masterwork.
