AAD<br> <br> Although Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) was in his own time valued most notably for his contribution as an outstanding organist and harpsichord player, during his stay in Cöthen in particular (1717 - 1723), some of his professional commitments were also directed towards the domain of the stringed instruments. While no documentary evidence has survived relating to his solo performances and skills in this field, there can be no doubt that he came to enrich the repertoire of music for violin by a number of fascinating compositions, attesting to his exceptionally deep knowledge of all aspects of violin playing. Bach´s violin concertos are the product of the composer´s encounter with the then fashionable genre of Italian instrumental concerto - exemplified quite quintessentially by the output of Vivaldi - which, however, the German Protestant genius transformed in an entirely original style, involving an amazingly rich contrapuntal and harmonic elaboration of the score, and of course, drawing on the peerlessly powerful resources of his invention. The soloist of all the concertos here was Josef Suk (b. 1929), the premier Czech violinist of his generation. The double concerto features him performing in tandem with Ladislav Jirásek (b. 1929), a Czech-born virtuoso based since the early 1970s in Australia.
