<p>Mendelssohn's successor as the music director of the famous Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and a close friend of Joachim and the Schumanns, the Danish conductor and composer Niels Wilhelm Gade melded Nordic spirit with the technique of the Germanic masters.
