Duke Ellington & John Coltrane - SACD (Single Layer)

Two big names on the cover of an LP was already a sales-promoting idea in 1962 and so the pianist Duke Ellington was allowed to join the actual John Coltrane Quartet. They played mainly songs by Ellington and this marketing idea actually led to a remarkable album in which two greats of jazz treat the material at hand with great respect.

The title track In a Sentimental Mood in particular was a winner thanks to the collaboration between Ellington and Coltrane, but Take the Coltrane and Big Nick also developed a charm all of their own. In addition to Duke Ellington on piano and John Coltrane on tenor and sproano saxophone, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums can be heard as part of the Coltrane Quartet. However, Ellington's partners Aaron Bell on bass and Sam Woodyard on drums also played on some songs

'Duke Ellington & John Coltrane' is a jazz classic from 1962, with the up-and-coming saxophone talent playing alongside the established pianist. You might think that this combination would have led to a dynamic but tense interplay between the two jazz generations. Instead, the result was a relaxed, respectful meeting of like-minded musical souls who gave each other space.

Producer Bob Thiele decided against inviting Ellington's sidemen for the recordings. The two protagonists are accompanied by bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Elvin Jones, bassist Aaron Bell and drummer Sam Woodyard.

This title is an SHM-SACD. This format is a further development of the single-layer SACD and uses a particularly light-transparent plastic (super high material). This enables a significantly better readability of the pit-land structures on the surface than is possible with hybrid SACDs. Universal's SHM SACDs are generally re-digitized from the master tapes of the albums in DSD without any changes. SHM SACDs can be played on any SACD player.
