Conventional wisdom, which in this case may be correct, holds that Bill Evans' storied career peaked on June 25, 1961, a date that yielded two live recordings: 'Sunday at the Village Vanguard' and 'Waltz for Debby,' the last two documents of Evans' first and best trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian. In the two years he had played with Evans, LaFaro had opened up new possibilities for jazz bass, playing with a harmonically quirky, melodically flexible style that was unprecedented at the time. Ten days after recording this album, he died, aged just 25.
'Sunday At The Village Vanguard' is the first of two releases from the legendary recording session on June 25, 1961 at the New York jazz club of the same name. Bill Evans selected material for this album that pays tribute to his bassist Scott LaFaro, who died shortly afterwards.
The Bill Evans Trio is widely regarded as one of the best jazz trios ever, primarily due to the outstanding, equal interplay of its musicians. Instead of just supporting the pianist rhythmically, LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian contribute to a dialog at eye level. This can be heard on 'My Man's Gone Now', for example. Belongs in every collection!
The discs offered by Universal Japan are also MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) encoded. If you output the digital signal from the digital output of your CD player or the previously ripped data stream from your music server to a corresponding MQA-DA converter, you can generate a 24-bit signal with a sampling frequency of up to 352 Khz from the CD data.
